Motor operating modes

Added 03 March 2021

In the characteristics of the electric motor you can often see such a paragraph: "mode of operation" and then incomprehensible letters and numbers. What are the modes of operation, what they are, what do they depend on, what mode of operation of asynchronous electric motors of "TM Motor", what mode of operation of an asynchronous motor is the most universal and what electric motor will suit you better? Let's understand...

Let's specify that the parameter "mode" is regulated by GOST 183-74 and is uniform for all manufacturers.

There is no good or bad (better / worse) modes of operation. It all depends on how often you need to turn the motor on/off within an hour.

(S1) Continuous operation - running the machine at a constant load for a long enough time to achieve a constant temperature for all its parts.

(S2) Short-time operation is operation of the machine with constant load for a period of time not long enough for all machine parts to reach the set temperature, followed by stopping the machine for enough time to cool it down to less than 20°C above the ambient temperature.

(S3) Intermittent operation is a sequence of identical operating cycles, each of which includes a period of operation at constant load, during which the machine is not heated to a steady state temperature and a period of standstill, during which the machine is not cooled down to ambient temperature. Start-up losses have no effect on the temperature of machine parts.

(S4) Intermittent operation with starting influence - a sequence of identical operating cycles, each of which includes a starting time long enough for the starting losses to have an effect on the temperature of machine parts, operating time at constant load, during which the machine is not heated to the steady state temperature, and parking time, during which the machine is not cooled to ambient temperature.

(S5) Intermittent operation with the effect of starting processes and electric braking - a sequence of identical operating cycles, each of which includes a sufficiently long starting time, a constant load operating time in which the machine is not heated to a steady temperature, a fast electric braking time and a parking time in which the machine is not cooled down to ambient temperature.

(S6) Intermittent operation is a sequence of identical cycles, each of which includes a constant load operation time and an idling operation time, the duration of these periods being such that the temperature of the machine does not reach a steady-state temperature.

(S7) Intermittent mode with starting influence and electric braking - sequence of identical cycles, each of which includes a sufficiently long start-up time, constant-load operation and rapid electric braking. The mode does not contain pauses.

(S8) Intermittent mode with periodically varying speed - a sequence of identical cycles, each of which includes time with constant load and constant speed, followed by one or more periods at other constant loads, each of which corresponds to a different speed (for example, this mode is implemented when switching the number of pole pairs of asynchronous motor). The mode does not contain pauses.

So, summing up, we see that the choice of electric motor with a particular mode of operation depends on the specific circumstances. What kind of equipment will the motor be installed on? How often will you turn it on and off (number of starts/stops per minute)?

If your equipment runs constantly and only turns on/off a few times a day, then S1 is probably the right operating mode for you. If you need frequent starts, e.g. if you have a crane beam, a sawmill or a winch, then S2 (crane mode) is the right motor for you. MNP Promelectro Company New Kakhovka manufactures asynchronous electric motors with operating mode S1. We also have a line of motors with S2 operating mode. If necessary, we can offer the customer electric motors with any operating mode.

If it is difficult for you to choose from a huge line of electric motors of "TM Motor" trademark or you find it difficult to decide on your operating mode, just ask any of our managers for the phone numbers on the site.
