Let's start with deciphering the concept. Protection levels are indicated by two Latin letters IP (International Protection) and two digits. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against ingress of solid foreign bodies (including dust) into the motor. The second digit indicates the degree of protection against water ingress into the motor. The protection values themselves are regulated by GOST 17494-72.

So what degrees of protection are there in general, what do they protect against and what degree of protection is optimal when choosing an electric motor

Dust protection

As mentioned earlier, the first digit indicates the degree of dust protection. The range of degrees is from zero to six:

• «0» - means that no special protection is available.
• «1» - there is protection against penetration into the shell of a large part of the human body, for example, the hand, and against penetration of solid bodies larger than 50 mm.
• «2» - protection against penetration of fingers or objects no longer than 80 mm. And against penetration of solid bodies larger than 12 mm.
• «3» - protection of the motor against penetration of solid bodies (wire, tools, etc.) with a diameter or thickness of more than 2.5 mm into the shell.
• «4» - protection against penetration of wire and solid bodies larger than 1.0 mm into the shell.
• «5» - protection against dust. The penetration of dust into the shell is not completely prevented, but dust cannot penetrate in sufficient quantities to impair motor operation.
• «6» - dust resistance. Dust penetration is completely prevented.

Moisture protection

The second digit in the IP classification. Just like dust protection, it is divided into six degrees:

• «0» - no degree of protection.
• «1» - protection against water droplets. Water droplets falling vertically on the shell must not have a harmful effect on the motor.
• «2» - protection against water droplets. Water droplets falling vertically on the shell must not have a harmful effect on the motor when it is tilted at any angle of 15 degrees relative to the normal position.
• «3» - protection against rain. Rain falling on the shell at a vertical angle of up to 600 should not have a harmful effect on the motor.
• «4» - protection against splashes. Water sprayed on the shell in any direction must not have a harmful effect on the product.
• «5» - protection against water jets. A water jet thrown in any direction at the shell must not have a harmful effect on the motor.
• «6» - protection against water waves. Water should not get inside the shell in an amount sufficient to damage the product when it is agitated.

So what degree of motor protection is optimal and universal? At what IP level will the motor feel comfortable in a small room, in a workshop, or outdoors under a canopy? Of course, it all depends on the specific conditions where you will operate it. If your engine operates indoors with low humidity, then IP43 will do just fine. But conditions are not always ideal.
