Electric motors, like most electrical appliances, emit noise when they operate. But how do you know if an electric motor is making an acceptable level of noise or if it's a motor defect?
Sometimes our managers are approached by customers with a complaint that the motors make a lot of noise. The customers cannot answer the questions "how much?" and "what device did you use to make the measurements?".

Just to clarify, the limit values of noise levels of electric machines are determined according to GOST 16372-84.
Electric machines are divided into classes 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to the permissible noise level in idling conditions. The noise characteristic is the average sound level at a distance of 1 meter from the machine contour or the corrected sound power level. The sound power level is specified for machines supplied for export. Class 1 machines must have a sound level at a distance of 1 meter from the machine contour not exceeding the values specified in Table 5 for IP44 or Table 6 for IP 22 and IP23. The permissible sound levels of Class 2, 3 and 4 machines must be 5, 10 and 15 dB (on the "a" scale) below the permissible levels of Class 1, respectively. The limit values of the corrected sound power levels of Class 1 machines with IP44 and IP23 protection are given in the tables
